How To build a Skin Care Routine
How to build your skin care routine
There are so many skin care products out there, all claiming to help solve a plethora of skin care issues that it can be confusing to discern what will work for you and what won’t, so we’ve put a step to step guide to help you build your skin care routine for your self care journey.
Cleanser
The first step of any skin care routine should be cleansing, both in the morning and at night, and there are plenty of different types for different skin types.
Oily or acne prone skin - foaming cleansers help break down dirt and excess sebum from pores.
Dry / eczema-prone skin - lotion based cleaners are made with emollients which help get rid of impurities while hydrating skin
Mature skin - melting balms are very soothing and are great for dissolving makeup
Sensitive skin - Oil based cleaners are great for moisturising and absorbing the oils on your skin, they’re also lightweight and often non-comedogenic and therefore won't block your pores
Toner
Toner is an important staple of any skin care routine. They are lightweight liquids that deliver nutrients to your skin and help it absorb the rest of your products more efficiently. Here are some important ingredients to look for, depending on your skin’s needs.
Alpha and beta hydroxy acids to gently remove dead skin cells that could potentially clog pores. They also improve sun-damaged skin and minimize dullness.
Hyaluronic acid helps boost hydration, keep you dewy and plump skin to subtly treat fine lines.
Rose water and green tea calms irritation and reduces redness with an anti-inflammatory effect.
Vitamin E and C fights daily exposure to free radicals that can age your skin.
Serums
Like the aforementioned products, serums also cater to an abundance of skin care needs. They are concentrated doses of active ingredients. Here are some of the most popular.
Hyaluronic acid for hydration and to strengthen the barrier function (the top layer of your skin) to prevent moisture loss.
Vitamin C to help brighten dull skin and decrease dark spots over time.
Retinol, vitamin B3, peptides stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, proteins in the body that help prevent lines and sagging skin.
Colloidal sulfur, niacinamide calms redness and irritation by decreasing inflammation, and improves acne with its antimicrobial effects.
Moisturiser
Moisturiser does what it says on the tin, moisturizes your skin! And you guessed it, the type you need differs based on your skin type!
Oily skin - Gel moisturiser is mostly water based, light weight and quickly absorbed by the skin
Dry - Cream moisturiser is more oil based and heavier than a lotion, so should lock in more moisture
Sensitive/Inflamed skin (Not acne prone) - a balm moisturiser is good for drier skin and has a heavier texture than cream moisturisers
The difference between your day time and night time moisturiser is simple - SPF! Your day time moisturiser should absolutely have at least SPF 30, while your night time moisturiser should be more focused on replenishing moisture levels. Make sure you apply your sun screen 30 mins before sun exposure and reapply every two hours
And those are the basics of any skin care routine! Of course your skin may have more specific concerns, that require different treatments. Do some research around what your skin needs to remedy it’s problems and consider booking a consultation with a specialist who offers treatments that are unavailable to carry out at home.
