Should I Get a Face Peel?

We’ve all seen the pictures of people peeling off flakes of their skin after getting a face peel, and whether you cringe at the sight or find them inexplicably satisfying, face peels are becoming more and more popular! It may have a lot of people wondering… should I get a face peel?

First things first… what is a face peel?!

The treatment involves a chemical solution being put on the skin, causing it to blister and peel off over the span of a few days. There are different types of chemical peels, varying on how deep of a peel you’re looking for. They are used to improve the skin’s appearance, and can treat:

  • Wrinkles

  • Fine lines

  • Sun damage

  • Acne scars

  • Age spots

  • Melasma

  • Scars

Types of chemical peels:

Light Chemical Peel

A light or superficial chemical peel removes the outer layer of your skin, called the epidermis. This peel is useful for treating fine wrinkles, acne, uneven skin tone and dryness. You can have a light chemical peel as often as every two to five weeks depending on what you’re aiming for with your skin.

Medium Chemical Peel

This type of chemical peel removes dead skin cells from the epidermis and from sections of the upper part of the middle layer of your skin, called the dermis. This level of chemical peel can also treat wrinkles, acne scars and uneven skin tone. You might repeat one of these after three to nine months to maintain results.

Deep Chemical Peel

A deep chemical peel removes dead skin cells from the epidermis, and from the mid to lower layer of your dermis. If you have deep wrinkles, scars or precancerous growths, a deep chemical peel could be the right course of action for you. You can only have a deep chemical peel once. This is because they affect the deeper layers of the skin, and the results are often permanent.

What should I expect after the procedure?

Your skin may feel like you’ve had a sunburn, and act accordingly. You may experience redness, soreness and peeling skin. If you’ve had a medium-depth peel, you may get swelling and blisters that will crust and peel off over a week or two. Deeper peels may take two weeks to heal, but require more after care depending on where the peel has taken place, which should be explained by your technician.

After getting a chemical peel, make sure you wear SPF religiously, and avoid the sun as much as possible in the following months, as your new skin will be highly sensitive. Make sure you also keep your skin moisturised, and avoid any exfoliation treatments while your skin is still peeling.

Who is suitable for a chemical peel?

In general, fairer skinned people are more suitable for a chemical peel. If you have darker skin, you may also have good results, depending upon the type of problem being treated. But you also may be more likely to have an uneven skin tone after the procedure. This is why it’s important to have a consultation before you have the treatment.
