Myth Busters: Skin Care!

The beauty industry is finally focusing on self-care, from skin care products and tools, healthier mindsets and an overall more inclusive beauty scene! With this comes a million different opinions on how to take care of your skin, so we’re going to clarify what is good advice, and what is a myth!

  1. Only teenagers get acne, you’ll outgrow it!

Unfortunately, acne has a habit of being here for a long time, not a good time. While men have been known to outgrow acne after puberty because of their change in hormones, however for women, this isn’t the case, because their hormones fluctuate throughout their lifetimes. Things such as menopause, pregnancy, birth control, diet, stress etc. can cause changes in your skin.

2. Makeup causes acne

This is a BIG myth that gets spread around. There is no conclusive evidence that points to this being true. What CAN cause breakouts is not taking your makeup off properly which clogs pores, the method of removal or poor skin care. Makeup wipes alone are NOT an efficient way to take off your makeup. You can use a variety of different products, such as a reusable makeup removing cloth, face wash, makeup melting balm, etc.

3. The more expensive the product = the more they work

While there are definitely good products with a higher price tag… there are equally bad products in the same price range. The same can be said for the lower price range. The answer is in the formula and products, when you figure out what works for your skin, you can navigate any price range.

4. Dry skin can be fixed by drinking more water

Dry skin isn’t as simple as skin lacking hydration, and studies that have compared the water content of dry skin and normal or oily skin show that there is not a statistically significant difference. The best combat for dry skin is a good skin care routine.

5. You need to change your products frequently, because your skin adapts and those products will eventually stop working.

Things that are healthy for your skin will remain healthy for your skin, they will not suddenly become invalid once your skin has ‘figured out it’s way around it’. Your skin wants to work with you and it enjoys being taken care of!
