Microneedling, how does it really work?

Microneedling is fast becoming a popular treatment to treat acne scars and uneven skin tone, however this means there is a lot of misinformation around what it actually is and what benefits it has for the skin. Microneedling is a brilliant treatment and a great addition to your skin care routine, and we’re going to outline the procedure and benefits.

What is it?

Microneedling is a pretty accurate name for the treatment, as it involves microneedles gently puncturing the skin to induce collagen production to improve the appearance of scarring, from acne or otherwise, stretch marks, sun damage, shrinking pores, improving the efficiency of topical products used on the skin, rosacea reduction etc.

How long does it last?

A form of collagen therapy, the treatment is fast, only taking about thirty minutes, with results from your first round of treatment lasting between four and six weeks after they have finalised. You should expect to come in for a follow-up treatment eight to 12 weeks after your first treatment.

The procedure:

During the procedure, the technician makes small pricks under the skin with a pen-like tool. These are so small, it’s unlikely you’ll notice them. The tool will be moved over your skin evenly. After the treatment, your technician should apply a serum or something to calm your skin, as well as some SPF to protect your skin from the suns UV rays.

The aftercare:

You may notice some redness or irritation a few days following your treatment, but this is expected to subside quickly. Make sure you avoid the sun for 48 hours afterward and apply SPF daily. Avoid exercise and sweating for 24 hours after your treatment.

Do not apply any other products to your skin for 24 hours. Avoid makeup for 24 hours. Avoid swimming, saunas and spa environments for 24 hours. No chemical peels or skin treatments for 2 weeks.

And that’s it! You’re one step closer to glowing skin, now to booking the appointment!
